Measles is one of the most infectious diseases on Earth and has been the cause of epidemics, but it’s not discussed much today. At one time in history, epidemics were common – and so were deaths as a result of them. Over the last decade, however, deaths from measles have plummeted. The cause for this is increased research and production of vaccinations.
According to the results of a World Health Organization (WHO) study, an estimated 9.6 million children have been saved from measles-related death over the last 10 years. This is attributed to an unprecedented 85 percent vaccination rate worldwide. Still, despite the significant improvements in this area, the WHO failed to reach its goal of a 90 percent reduction in deaths by 2010.
