My mother has CML, and her doctor has prescribed SPRYCEL. We have applied to the Destination Access patient assistance program and were denied because my mother is not a permanent US resident. We do not know what to do. There is no way she can afford buying SPRYCEL. She has no insurance, either.

My name is Susan Mayhew. I survived breast cancer in 1996 with mastectomy and chemotherapy, only to be diagnosed in 2005 with chronic myelogenous leukemia. I had Health Net coverage through my employer, Marana Unified School District in Tucson Arizona. I kept their coverage for one year after I retired from teaching and then retirees were essentially bumped by pricing to the Arizona State Retirement’s health insurance provider, PacifiCare as of July 1st, 2008.

I refilled my prescription for Sprycel, my leukemia medication this week. Last month HealthNet was billed $6,532.29 for a month’s supply of little white pills. This week, PacifiCare paid out $7,183.00 for this month’s supply. I have no idea what the limit is for cost per illness or lifetime payout with PacifiCare, but a recent article in the Arizona Daily Star discussed the treatment limits that cancer patients face… this is much scarier than the cancer itself!
